Canada Removes Arranged Employment Points from Express Entry

Canada has revised the structure of its Express Entry system by eliminating points previously awarded for arranged employment. This strategic adjustment reflects the government’s broader objective of modernising its skilled immigration model and promoting equity among candidates — regardless of their access to employer sponsorships.
What Has Changed?
Under the previous system, candidates with a valid job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) could claim up to 200 additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. These points significantly boosted a candidate’s chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
However, as of March 2025, these points have been removed. Now, applicants are assessed more holistically on factors such as age, education, language proficiency, and work experience — without the outsized influence of pre-arranged employment.
Why Canada Made This Change
The decision aims to level the playing field for highly qualified applicants who do not yet have Canadian job offers but possess the skills and potential to integrate successfully. It also addresses concerns around inconsistent LMIA standards and abuse of employment-based points to game the system.
By removing these points, Canada hopes to attract a more diverse pool of talent from a wider range of professional sectors and national backgrounds, reinforcing its position as a merit-based, future-focused immigration destination.
Impact on Candidates and Employers
For applicants, this change highlights the importance of maximising CRS scores through language testing, educational equivalency, and provincial nomination pathways. Employer-supported applications are still welcome, but their impact on Express Entry rankings is now neutralised.
For employers, it means a shift in how foreign talent is recruited — focusing more on post-arrival onboarding rather than using job offers as a lever for visa acceleration.
