From 20 July 2026, eligible applicants applying online from within the UK can pay an additional £500 for the citizenship priority service. Under the Home Office priority service guidance, the Home Office will usually aim to decide the application within 30 working days of biometric submission, compared with the standard service level of six months from receipt.

The service must be selected during the online application process. An application already submitted cannot be upgraded, and paper applications are not eligible. The online journey will confirm whether the route qualifies. Eligible categories include naturalisation, registration of a child under 18 and several other registration routes.

Priority processing changes speed only. It does not relax residence, lawful presence, English-language, Life in the UK, good-character or documentary requirements, and it does not improve the likelihood of approval. Applicants following the broader UK immigration rule updates in 2026 should treat it as an administrative option, not a new citizenship route.

How the 30-working-day period operates

The priority period begins when biometric information is submitted. It is a target, not a guaranteed deadline. A decision may take longer if the Home Office needs further evidence, enhanced scrutiny, identity or national-security checks, information from another government department, or consideration of a complex case.

There is no next-working-day super priority service for citizenship. If the target is missed because additional information or checks were required, the priority fee will not usually be refunded.

Applicants should also distinguish citizenship processing from wider settlement policy. What the priority service costs

Adult naturalisation currently costs £1,839, including the £130 citizenship ceremony fee. Adding priority processing brings the total Home Office charge to £2,339 per adult. Registration of a child under 18 normally costs £1,000, making the total £1,500 with priority processing. A further £130 ceremony fee may become payable if the child turns 18 before a decision.

The £500 charge applies separately to each applicant. It is most useful where a faster decision addresses a specific employment, travel, family or administrative need. Applications already with the Home Office

An existing application cannot be moved into the paid service. Applicants may request discretionary priority treatment, but approval is not guaranteed. The Home Office may consider cases involving a particular job, essential travel that cannot be made on existing documents, an applicant approaching their 18th birthday, or significant inconvenience caused by Home Office error or delay. Supporting evidence is required.

Citizenship may also form part of a wider mobility plan. Before deciding, review the practicalities of holding a second passport. Separate options may include Greece residency by investment, the Hungary Golden Visa, the Italy investor visa or St Lucia citizenship by investment, subject to each programme’s rules.
